+ Free ShippingYou can start great seedlings indoors with this fluorescent tube grow light. The included bulbs are high output, full spectrum white light, which is just what you need for seedlings. You’ll have to hang this within a few inches of the tops of your plants immediately when they emerge from the soil. This unit gives its light output in lumens, 5000, to be exact. Lumens as a unit of light intensity for growing plants is an outdated unit of measure. What we should be seeing are PAR and PPFD. Those latter terms are generally associated with LED fixtures. Frankly, fluorescent tubes are an outdated technology for growing plants, but this unit will work just fine for seedling starts. If you want to take plants through the vegetative stage and into flowering, you’ll need something of higher intensity. The big benefit in continuing to use these fluorescent fixtures is that the tubes are replaceable and cheap. Compared to LED, that’s a big advantage. When the LED fixtures deteriorate, you have to just toss them out. This unit has a socket for daisy chaining multiple units together. There are hanging cables on the back to help make positioning easier. I’d think you might put two full flats of seedlings under this lamp fixture. The only way to tell is to experiment. It’ll definitely be more than adequate for a single full flat. If you don’t have a greenhouse, this is your solution for starting seeds early indoors. Compared to the cost of a greenhouse, you’re getting off by spending just pennies on the dollar for one or two of these fluorescent tube fixtures.Update: This fixture will illuminate a single flat of seedlings well, but not two flats. I’ve got it lit up right now, and it’s bringing along some tobacco seedlings way ahead of schedule. The light meter app installed on my phone says that two flats it’s just too much area for this lamp to provide cover. Got two flats of seedlings? Buy two of these fixtures. They’re inexpensive, and a good deal.
